For more than a century, the name “Tunaville” has been used to describe the Portuguese fishing community in San Diego. It refers to the neighborhood around Shelter Island, where immigrants from Madeira and the Azores settled and built what became a thriving, family-run tuna-fishing industry. Although the industry eventually changed and moved on, the name “Tunaville” endured.
As the son of a Portuguese fisherman who arrived in Tunaville and never left, I’m proud and excited to carry on that name and help preserve its legacy.
